Volunteering is a rewarding experience. It’s a chance to make a difference in your community, learn new skills, and meet like-minded people.
As a thank you for your time, English Heritage volunteers also receive a Volunteer Pass. This pass gives you and up to 6 of your family and/or friends free entry to all English Heritage sites across the country.
Muchelney Church needs your help!
Our parish church has always relied on volunteers to keep it running, but the church council has shrunk from over 12 members to just 3.
This small, dedicated team can no longer manage all the tasks needed to keep our church open, safe, and functioning for the whole village. If you love your church and wish it to continue as it is, please look at the roles below and see if you can help.
We have compiled a list of specific tasks and roles that need filling.
Church Operations & Services
Sidesmen for Sunday Services: Help open the church, prepare for the service, check communion supplies, and clear away afterward. Full training will be given.
Candles: Manage the church's candle supplies, including replacing choir and altar candles, refilling tea lights, ordering new stock, and sending receipts to the treasurer.
WC Inspector: Join the team (via a WhatsApp group) to perform daily checks, ensuring the church WC is open, clean, and stocked with loo roll, paper towels, and soap.
Building & Grounds Maintenance
Building Maintenance Manager: A key role to oversee the building's upkeep. This includes completing repairs from the quinquennial inspection, responding to new repair needs, and organising the clearing of gutters, downpipes, and the parapet roof every 2 months.
Gullies & Pathways: Help keep the grounds safe by clearing gullies once a month and sweeping pathways, ensuring "slippery path" signs are displayed.
Meter Reading: Read the electric and water meters once a month and send the readings to the treasurer.
Events & Parking
Events Organiser(s): Join a team to manage church events. This involves:
Organising and buying supplies.
Creating and distributing adverts (in consultation with the PCC).
Recruiting and organising a team of helpers.
Managing parking (requesting permission from English Heritage, putting out signs).
Handling post-event tasks like delivering leftovers and prizes, and writing thank you letters.
Parking: A specific role to liaise with the Events Organiser and English Heritage, managing the gates and checking the grounds for events like funerals or BBQs.
Governance & Communication
Member of the Parochial Church Council (PCC): The church needs new council members.
Assistant Churchwarden (Communication): A vital role to take over communications, including managing email enquiries and updating the church's "A Church Near You" webpage.
Please consider what you can do to help.
To volunteer or ask any questions, please contact the Churchwarden, Sarah Nicholas.
